BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT AS COLLINS WINS WORLD TITLE! WOOKA ACHIEVEMENT FOR JAPANESE POKER!
Mai 28, 2009
London — 28th May 2009 – 28-year-old Aisling Collins, a television producer from Rickmansworth in the UK scooped $50,000 and the title at the http://www.partypoker.com/ Women’s World Open III in London! Collins, whose aggressive game impressed everybody enthralled by the tournaments strongest ever final table, was in complete shock and there were nearly tears as the gravity of her achievement sunk in.
“I was so, so nervous going into this tournament but after a while I found it easy to relax and play my natural game,” said Collins. “To win this tournament means absolutely everything to me. My previous biggest poker win was in the region of $8k so this is amazing. I’m in shock, it is fantastic to win $50,000 – I just don’t know what I am going to do with it yet! One thing I do know I am going to do is get some Christian Louboutin shoes. I saw Jennifer Tilly’s and they were great!”
Collins, who has produced educational programming for Sky Poker alongside the likes of leading professional players Roland De Wolfe, Neil Channing and Marty Smyth, is also a talented online player with the potential to progress in the game, either side of the camera. She had a large fan base sweating her in the green room, on the tv show and on the online forums. She is a prominent member of the Blonde Poker Community and a member of ‘Shrewdies on Tour,’ a stable of Blonde online players led by UK pro James ‘Flushy’ Dempsey. Collins credits UK figurehead Tony ‘Tikay’ Kendall with introducing her to the game and, naturally, all the Blonde members were delighted.
“The Shrewdies went on tour to Vegas for the WSOP yesterday,” said Tikay. “They were on a flight until 9pm last night so when they landed there were messages flying around everywhere. We’re all thrilled for Ling.” Collins doesn’t intend to join her friends in Vegas, however, despite the fact that she is $50,000 better off! “It’s back to my day job,” said Collins.
Aisling was involved in a tense heads-up battle with Japan’s Kim Wooka and there were a number of swings either way before Collins came out on top. It always seemed as though Aisling was going to emerge triumphant, however. When heads-up play started Collins held a 450,000/250,000 advantage but Wooka soon clawed her way back. The decisive hand came when the blinds were 10,000/20,000. Aisling raised to 70,000 with Jd 5d and was called by Kim with Qh 10d. The flop came down Jc Kd 9d and Kim checked. Collins raised another 70,000 and Wooka went all-in. Collins calls and the 6d on the turn gives her the flush and victory!
28-year-old Wooka is a professional poker player from Osaka in Japan and was playing in her first major tournament in Europe. She was Japanese Ladies Champion in 2007 and cashed at the WSOP last year. She was invited to the tournament by the organizers after the Asian Poker Tour Manila back in January. “I wanted to win but I have to give credit to Aisling – she certainly wasn’t afraid to move all-in,” said Wooka. “This has been a great experience for me and fantastic exposure. Poker is just beginning in Asia – it is so important at this early stage to advertise a good image and emphasise the skill in the game.” PartyPoker.com is currently offering online qualifiers to the Asian Poker Tour Macau, more details can be found at http://www.partypoker.com/news/items/apt_macau_2009.html
Collins showed brilliant spirit and superb skill during the tournament and her aggressive play meant she had one star fan in the form of poker prodigy Annette Obrestad, who was in the commentary box. Aisling finished second place in her heat and only won her way through to the final through the last gasp runner’s up table. In that heat she was so dominant in taking out last year’s champion Soraya Homam that many regarded her as favourite at the start of the seven seat final table. Collins had two good friends on the final table in the form of Jen Mason and Maria Demetriou, both of whom have reached the final table in this event in previous years. How did she feel about busting them? “I treat my buddies well,” said a joking Collins.
The final table was the strongest in the event’s history. Jen Mason reached the final table of this tournament in its inaugural running in 2007, finishing second to Beverley Pace but, surprisingly, was first to exit even though she was one of those fancied to triumph. Out in sixth was Cat O’Neill from Belfast, who was put forward for the tournament by WSOP bracelet holder, Poker Million and PartyPoker.com World Open winner Marty Smyth. Fifth place belonged to the popular Maria ‘Chili’ Demetriou, who was gunning for a top three finish to give her a Vegas bankroll but she fell victim to her buddy Collins on a tear-up. Next to go was Cecilia Nordenstam, who has for a long time been one of the most glamorous figures on the Swedish circuit but also a deadly player as she showed in her heat. Cecilia cashed in her first five WPT events and put on a great show here.
As the table went three handed Collins had 306,000, Shana Casaletto had 254,000 and Wooka 140,000. Brighton’s Casaletto, however, was the next to go. She was expected to run deep in this tournament after recently winning back-to-back GUKPT side events but fell victim to lady of the moment Collins. This left Collins and Wooka to fight it out. Full details about all the hands can be found at http://www.matchroompokerforum.co.uk/
A PartyPoker.com spokesman said: “Aisling was a fantastic and deserving winner and overall we were delighted with the great final table. Japan’s Kim Wooka is also a brilliant runner-up – there is little doubt that she is one to watch out for in the future. Britain’s got talent but so does Japan!”
Eddie Hearn, Director of Matchroom Sport said: “As the Voice of Poker Jesse May said, the final table is not where champions meet it’s where champions are born and no one deserved the title more than Aisling. She was drawn in arguably the toughest heat and then had to come through the gruelling runners-up heat before taking down the final table. The standard throughout the whole tournament was simply stunning.”
The Women’s World Open III was a Matchroom Sport organized tournament that saw 36 players from around the world battle it out for a $108,000 prize pool in the $3,000 buy-in event. The line-up was formidable and included PartyPoker.com Premier League III star and inaugural WSOP Europe winner Annette Obrestad, EPT Dortmund winner Sandra Naujoks, Germany’s Christine Klecz and WSOP bracelet holder Jennifer Tilly. Others who failed to make the later stages included UK Women’s Poker Tour Champion Lynne Beaumont, Veronique Gordon, European Ladies champion Liv Boeree, France’s Lise ‘The Pink Lady’ Vigezzi, Ireland’s Colette Murphy, Eliza Burnett, Stephanie Bergener and Polish boxing champion Agnieska Rylik. There were also four specially invited players from PartyPoker.com’s VIP club, http://www.palladiumlounge.com/ Women’s World Open II defending champion Soraya Homam from Germany narrowly missed out on a place at the final table by finishing runner-up in the second chance heat. ‘There is always next time,” said Homam, who put up a valiant defence of her title. The UK’s Beverley Pace won the inaugural Women’s World Open I title.
The tournament featured six six-seater heats with one six seat runner-up heat. The final table featured seven players. Commentary will be led by Jesse May, who will be joined by Annette Obrestad. The action will be broadcast on Five in the UK later this year and then distributed internationally. A limited number of qualifiers took place with Equal Chance, International Club and the Eglinton Casino in Galway all running satellites.

PARTYPOKER.COM WOMEN’S WORLD OPEN III FINAL TABLE IS SET WPT FOUNDER AND A POKER HISTORIAN JOIN SEXTON FOR HALL OF FAME CAMPAIGN
Mai 27, 2009
London — 27th May 2009 – The final table is set at the http://www.partypoker.com/ Women’s World Open III in London! The popular Matchroom Sport organized tournament sees 36 players from around the world battle it out for a $108,000 prize pool in the $3,000 buy-in event. The final table is the strongest in the event’s history and the winner takes home a cool $50,000. Tournament Director Mad Marty Wilson has called shuffle up and deal and live updates can be followed at http://www.matchroompokerforum.co.uk/
Jen Mason, Maria Demetriou, Shana Casaletto, Aisling Collins and Cat O’Neill lead the charge for the UK. Mason reached the final table of this event in its inaugural running in 2007, finishing second to Beverley Pace. Also a highly respected live tournament reporter, Mason will be looking to go one better this time and has a respected aggressive game that fits well with the format. Similarly well supported is Maria ‘Chili’ Demetriou. Maria was one the favourites to win the tournament before a card was dealt and amongst other great domestic achievements has made the final table of Late Night Poker. She came through what many thought was the most difficult of the heats that also featured EPT Dortmund winner Sandra Naujoks and Spanish whirlwind May Maceiras.
Shana Casaletto has won back-to-back GUKPT side events recently and was in dominant form taking down the first heat. Aisling Collins is a tv producer, who, like a lot of the field, has big support in the green room and in the online forums. Cat O’Neill is from Belfast and was put forward for the tournament by WSOP bracelet holder, Poker Million and PartyPoker.com World Open winner Marty Smyth. Joining the UK hot shots is Japan’s Kim Wooka, who dazzled to win her heat. Wooka already has great name in the Far East as Japanese Ladies Champion but was discovered by organizers of this tournament at the Asian Poker Tour Manila event back in January and she certainly isn’t disappointing. Joining Kim is Cecilia Nordenstem, who has for a long time been one of the most glamorous figures on the Swedish circuit but also a deadly player as she showed in her heat. Cecilia cashed in her first five WPT events.
Other players who failed to make the final table include PartyPoker.com Premier League III star and inaugural WSOP Europe winner Annette Obrestad, Germany’s Christine Klecz and WSOP bracelet holder Jennifer Tilly. There were also four specially invited players from PartyPoker.com’s VIP club, http://www.palladiumlounge.com/
Women’s World Open II defending champion Soraya Homam from Germany narrowly missed out on a place at the final table by finishing runner-up in the second chance heat. The UK’s Beverley Pace won the inaugural Women’s World Open I title.
A PartyPoker.com spokesman said: “The standard of play has been strongest in the event’s history and the final table is sure to be a great spectacle.”
The tournament featured six six-seater heats with one six seat runner-up heat. The final table features seven players. Commentary will be led by Jesse May, who will be joined by Annette Obrestad. The action will be broadcast on Five in the UK later this year and then distributed internationally. Campaigning for Mike Sexton induction to Poker’s Hall of Fame in 2009 is in full swing.
Vote now at http://www.worldseriesofpoker.com/pokerhalloffame/halloffamevoting.asp.
Among those to come on board include WPT Founder, CEO and President Steve Lipscomb and Des Wilson author of ‘Ghosts at the Table – The Amazing Story of Poker.’ They join inaugural WSOP Europe winner Annette Obrestad in publicly endorsing the ‘Ambassador of Poker.’
Steve Lipscomb — “I would support Mike Sexton for president, much less induction into the Poker Hall of Fame. Mike is the consummate face of poker. He was making poker mainstream before it had a prayer of being mainstream. He helped launch the World Poker Tour – which changed the poker world forever. Then, he convinced the World Poker Tour to put PartyPoker on the Tour in season one – which changed the poker world again forever. His commitment and love for the game — which is evidenced every time he appears on-screen in a World Poker Tour episode — is part of what has transformed this great game into the first-ever global aspirational sport. Let’s get the man into the Poker Hall of Fame!”
Des Wilson — “Having spent a number of years studying the history of the game, I can think of nobody more deserving than Mike Sexton to be in the hall of fame and urge everyone else to support him. He is more than a great player – he is, and has been for many years, an outstanding ambassador for the game.”
VOTE MIKE SEXTON FOR POKER’S HALL OF FAME! AMBASSADOR OF POKER DESERVES 2009 INDUCTION
Mai 26, 2009
Gibraltar — 26th May 2009 — Nominations are now open for this year’s induction to the Poker Hall of Fame and today marks the start of a campaign for the induction of Mike Sexton. For the first time in the history of the Poker Hall of Fame the early stage of the nomination process is open to the general public.
You can vote for Mike now at: http://www.worldseriesofpoker.com/pokerhalloffame/halloffamevoting.asp
A PartyPoker.com spokesman said: “We encourage the poker community to vote online for Mike Sexton’s induction into Poker’s Hall of Fame. Mike famously said that poker takes five minutes to learn and a lifetime to master – it takes five minutes to vote and mark the lifetime achievement of the master! Mike meets all the criteria and deserves to be top of the list when the process gets to the Hall of Fame committee.”
Inaugural WSOP Europe winner Annette Obrestad has already expressed her intention to vote for Mike. “I may be from a different generation of poker players to Mike but in my mind he deserves induction into poker’s hall of fame this year.”
PartyPoker.com recently renewed its association with Mike, who will act as a host, consultant, ambassador and player. Sexton needs little introduction and is unarguably one of the most respected figures in the game. As the face and voice of the World Poker Tour and holder of a WSOP bracelet, Mike is truly one of the games pioneers. Sexton is in the top ten for the most cashes at the World Series of Poker and is instantly recognizable to all poker enthusiasts. Regarded as ‘The Ambassador of Poker,’ for years Mike advocated corporate involvement with poker to take the game he loves into the mainstream. Notably, Sexton also won the first $10k buy-in NL hold’em championship event at Foxwoods World Poker Finals in 1992 and in 2000 was the first American to win the championship event at the Euro Finals of Poker in Paris, which at the time was the biggest event in Europe.
Through his role with the World Poker Tour Mike brought the game to millions around the world. In 2006 Sexton won the Tournament of Champions at the World Series of Poker, a concept he had originally created. He donated $500,000 of his winnings to charity and has since become a co-founder of http://www.pokergives.org/, which encourages players to make charitable donations.
The Poker Hall of Fame was established in 1979. Its membership includes poker’s most influential players and other important contributors to the game. There are 16 living members, and to date 37 members have been bestowed the honour of entry. The WSOP Hall of Fame traditionally elects one or two new members annually. The enshrinement ceremony is now held during the final table of the Main Event of the WSOP. The criteria for selection is as follows:
A player must have played poker against acknowledged top competition
Played for high stakes
Played consistently well, gaining the respect of peers
Stood the test of time
Or, for non-players, contributed to the overall growth and success of the game of poker, with indelible positive and lasting results
Mike ticks the boxes! The Hall of Fame needs its ambassador! Amongst the most recent inductees include Henry Orenstein, Dewey Tomko, Phil Hellmuth, Barbara Enright, TJ Cloutier, Bobby Baldwin, Johnny Chan and Lyle Berman. Doyle Brunson was given Hall of Fame status in 1987. Once the public has voted the top ten among consideration are announced during the Main Event. It then goes to a committee stage in August and then a secret ballot of living Hall of Famers in September. In addition, a select group of media members will also be sent a ballot for ranking the finalists. You can vote for Mike now at: http://www.worldseriesofpoker.com/pokerhalloffame/halloffamevoting.asp

Gibraltar – 14th May 2009 — http://www.partypoker.com/ has seen the recent news that Paris Hilton has had her beloved blue Bentley vandalized, with reports suggesting eggs were also thrown. It is not the only reported problem the heiress has had with her luxury four wheels as in April 2006 it was suggested that the multimillionaire had lost a Bentley Continental GT in a poker game. That month, PartyPoker.com offered her the chance to win her car back and now, more than three years later, the online poker room is repeating its offer! The rules are simple – she takes on poker legend Mike Sexton in a heads-up poker tournament for the chance to win a Bentley!
A PartyPoker.com spokesman said: “Forget one night in Paris, we’re offering her one night to win a replacement for her vandalized Bentley! Fortune may be on her side in many ways but when it comes to Bentleys it certainly doesn’t seem to be the case so we’re confident Mike Sexton would win.”
“We challenge her to take us up on the offer. Three years is a long time in showbusiness and we’re sure she’d jump at it now – it is a simple offer for the former Simple Life star. Following the original offer in 2006 the likes of Clonie Gowen also made public challenges to the heiress but so far Paris has resisted.”
“It is reported that in January this year Paris met Lady Gaga but she didn’t show the pop sensation her poker face. We encourage her to not walk on eggshells and show it to Mike Sexton instead!”
DATES SET FOR PARTYPOKER.COM SPORTS STARS CHALLENGE IV DIVERSE INTERNATIONAL LINE-UP IN SEARCH FOR ULTIMATE SPORTING POKER CHAMPION
Mai 6, 2009
Gibraltar – 6th May 2009 – The dates are fixed for the http://www.partypoker.com/ Sports Stars Challenge in London from the 29th May – 1st June. Sports stars, both past and present, will take their seats in the hope of being crowned the ultimate sporting poker champion in the strongest and most international line-up to date. For the first time in the Matchroom Sport organised event’s history there will be heats for motorsport professionals, top golfers and an online qualifier element. The number of heats increases from six to seven, with seven handed heats and a seven handed final table.
The motorsport table will feature Italian F1 driver Giancarlo Fisichella, while the golf heat will include both 2008 European Ryder Cup team member Graeme McDowell and Jean Van Der Velde (we know he loves water but is he a fish?). The international flavour permeates throughout the other heats. Football’s list of legends includes former Holland captain Frank De Boer, French World Cup winner Frank Leboeuf, Germany’s European Championship winner Thomas Helmer, Romania’s Florin Radiciou and Denmark and Liverpool legend Jan Molby.
The boxing tear-up on the felt features Germany’s former unbeaten World Champion Sven Ottke, Northern Ireland’s Commonwealth heavyweight and Prizefighter champion Martin Rogan and Poland’s female boxing champ Agnieska Rylik. The rugby heat will feature union’s former France and Wasps captain Raphael Ibanez and Australian league star Brad Drew, while darts sees living legend Phil Taylor lock horns with the likes of Russia’s ladies champ Anastasia Dobromyslova.
PartyPoker.com players had the chance to win a seat through a freeroll in the sports heat of their choice. The sports are football (two heats), rugby (union and league combined), motorsport, boxing, darts and golf. Two online qualifiers will join each heat, with a special initiative for players on http://www.partypoker.it/ (exclusive to Italian market) around the motorsport heat. Full details of the standard online qualifier element can be found at http://www.partypoker.com/news/items/ssc.html
A PartyPoker.com spokesman said: “We offered freerolls to win a seat in the event on the site but the places were snapped up so quickly that we were loath to promote it too much to save the disappointment of players. This is a once in a lifetime experience for a select group to take to the felt with their sporting heroes. The overall line-up is the most diverse and international in the event’s history and more star participant names will be released in the near future.”
Eddie Hearn, Director of Matchroom Sport said: “This is the poker event that the sporting world looks forward too and we have some great international names and great poker players competing for the trophy, big prize money and the ultimate bragging rights. We’re particularly excited to introduce the online element and the motorsport and golf heats this year.”
The winner of Sports Stars Challenge I was former rugby union star Austin Healey, while the second instalment saw victory for Irish snooker champion Ken Doherty. Last year’s winner was television presenter Kara Scott, who used the tournament as the starting point for a breakthrough successful year on the circuit that also included big cashes at the WSOP Main Event and Irish Open. Scott won £20,000 after defeating Manchester United football legend Norman Whiteside heads-up. There is no presenter heat in the new format this year.
The winner of each of the seven heats will take their seat at the final table, where seven players will battle it out until one of them walks away with the title. Each player sits down with 2,000 chips with the heat winner getting £7,000. The overall winner receives £20,000 with second getting £10,000 and third receiving £5,000.
Coverage of the event will be aired in the UK later this year on Sky Sports and then distributed internationally. Jesse May leads the commentary.
