JAKE CODY WINS INAUGURAL WPT LONDON POKER CLASSIC ROCHDALE WONDERKID PREVENTS $1 MILLION BONUS PAYOUT!
September 6, 2010
London – 5th September 2010 – 22-year-old UK wonderkid Jake Cody is the champion of the inaugural WPT London Poker Classic Main Event. Cody, from Rochdale, was mobbed by friends and picks up his first WPT title and a cheque for £273,783. Cody is now two thirds of the way to securing a triple crown after also winning EPT Deauville earlier this year.
Cody’s victory also saved tournament sponsors http://www.partypoker.com/ from paying out an extra $1 million bonus on top of the prize money as 21-year-old Swedish online qualifier Kristoffer Thorsson stood to win an extra $500,000 for himself and an extra $500,000 for his fellow online qualifiers if he finished first! Thorsson dominated for the majority of the tense final table but eventually it was Cody who went through the gears and forcefully imposed himself on the final in front of a big crowd at The Palm Beach Casino in Mayfair. Thorsson finished fourth, while fellow Swede Nichlas Mattsson was runner-up.
Mike Sexton, who was joined by Jesse May in the commentary box, said: “Jake Cody is an outstanding young player and mark my words when you see this action on television this final table is something very special. I rate it is amongst the best poker I have seen in nine years commentating for the WPT. This is going to be a real treat when it airs, I can hardly wait.”
Cody, who was dubbed ‘The Grim Reaper’ by a railbirding Dave ‘Devilfish’ Ulliott, was delighted with his win. Jake said: “This is crazy – I am so happy to win my first WPT title. It’s been an amazing year for me so far and to win a major tournament on UK soil is very special. I was totally aware there was huge pressure on Kristoffer because of the extra $1 million bonus. I thought he did well and actually believe he was the best player at the table.”

“This is amazing, it is so exciting,” said Kristoffer who won the Amsterdam Master Classics of Poker last November for €636,120. “If I win I get an extra $500,000 and nine other online qualifiers get to chop up $500,000.”
A PartyPoker.com spokesman said: “None of the nine players who are entitled to a share of the $500,000 cashed at the WPT London Poker Classic – Kristoffer could give them the ultimate bad beat jackpot! We are praying that Giovanni Safina saves us from a monster $1 million extra payout. This final table is going to be as tense as it gets.”
Two of the nine qualifiers entitled to their share of the money are fellow Swedes Per Linde and Jimmy Ostensson – both of whom made big impressions at the WPT in Paris.
Per is cheering on his friend and said: “We’re absolutely stoked. I busted out on the first day but thanks to Kristoffer I could still win over $55,000 from the WPT London Poker Classic after qualifying online at PartyPoker.com. It’s unbelievable.”
Tony G, who is at the Palm Beach for the £15,000 televised high rollers tournament today said: “I was cursing Kristoffer for putting a bad beat on me after he sent me on my bike and out of the tournament but good luck to the lad. This is huge.”
The £15,000 televised high rollers tournament starts at 3pm today, with registration open until 9.30pm.

ONLINE QUALIFIER WELL POISED FOR EXTRA $1 MILLION PAYOUT AT WPT LONDON POKER CLASSIC! GIOVANNI SAFINA TO THE RESCUE!
September 4, 2010
London – 3rd September 2010 – Day four is underway at the inaugural WPT London Poker Classic, presented by http://www.partypoker.com/ at The Palm Beach Casino in Mayfair. With 18 players left, Team PartyPoker.it pro Giovanni Safina is the big chip leader on 1,271,000. Safina is famous for finishing third in the PartyPoker.com Premier League IV -cashing for $156,000 and winning a $100,000 Team PartyPoker.com contract. After qualifying for the Premier League for just €100 Safina, a 44-year lawyer from Palermo, locked horns and beat the likes of Hellmuth and Negreanu at the famous event in Vegas back in February.
There is, however, a potentially bigger story emerging. Third in chips is 21-year-old Swede Kristoffer Thorsson. Kristoffer won the Amsterdam Master Classics of Poker last November for €636,120. He qualified online for the WPT London Poker Classic through the PartyPoker.com WPT global package meaning if he was to win this tournament an EXTRA $1 MILLION PAYOUT FROM PARTYPOKER.COM WOULD BE TRIGGERED. Kristoffer would be entitled to an extra $500,000, with fellow online qualifiers who also made their way through to London on the global package through PartyPoker.com getting a share of the other $500,000! If Kristoffer were to win the tournament he would take the first prize of £273,783, plus US$500,000! Not bad from a US$800 investment in online qualifiers.
Live updates and full information on the tournament can be found at: http://www.partypoker.com/blog
Kristoffer said: “There is still a long way to go but knowing about the extra $1 million payout has given me extra pressure. I know the other players are desperate for me to win and I will be doing my best!”
A PartyPoker.com spokesman said: “ There is little doubt that Kristoffer is a top player and is a massive contender for the title with eighteen players left. His friends Per Linde and Jimmy Ostensson both made big impressions at the WPT in Paris and they say he is the better player! We are biting our finger nails, in fact we are unlikely to have any left by the end of the day – it could get mega expensive and history could be made. Safina has such a big chip lead so it is a case of hoping our Italian pro with a track record of upsetting the odds saves PartyPoker from taking a bath with a $1 million payout. The atmosphere is going to be as tense as it gets today.”
Tony G, who is at the Palm Beach for the £15,000 televised high rollers tournament today said: “I was cursing Kristoffer for putting a bad beat on me after he sent me on my bike and out of the tournament but good luck to the lad. This is huge. Good luck to Safina too – he is a great player. I will never forget him calling Luke Schwartz a little boy at the Premier League even though he doesn’t speak much English.”
The £15,000 televised high rollers tournament starts at 3pm today, with registration open until 9.30pm.
